Sentence correction rules
Sentence Correction is a very important topic of English grammar. It is compulsory, especially in BCS, bank jobs, university admission tests, or degree-honors exams. But many students make mistakes in sentence correction because they don't know the correct rules. The truth is that sentence correction is not difficult. It is very easy if you know the correct rules! Today, in this article, I will share with you 5 important sentence correction rules. If you know these rules, you will be able to answer all the questions in the exams correctly.
Rule: 1
1. If the subject of a
sentence is “the + noun + of + noun”, the verb has to be corrected according to
the word after “the” and before “of”. If the word after “the” and before “of”
is singular, the verb will be singular, and if the word is plural, the verb
will be plural.
For example:
❌ Incorrect: The
quality of the products are very poor.
✅ Correct: The quality
of the products is very poor.
❌ Incorrect: The
players of the team is ready.
✅ Correct: The players
of the team are ready.
Rule: 2
If two different Nouns
or Pronouns are joined by and, the verb of that sentence will be plural.
For example:
❌ Incorrect: Rahim and
Karim is my friend.
✅ Correct: Rahim and
Karim are my friends.
❌ Incorrect: She and I
am going to school.
✅ Correct: She and I
are going to school.
Rule: 3
If two nouns are joined
by “and” and the is before the first noun, the verb of that sentence will be
singular.
For example:
❌ Incorrect: The
teacher and guide are absent.
✅ Correct: The teacher
and guide is absent.
❌ Incorrect: The owner
and manager are present.
✅ Correct: The owner
and manager is present.
Rule: 4
If two nouns are joined
by “and” and both nouns are preceded by “the”, the verb of that sentence will
be plural.
For example:
❌ Incorrect: The
singer and the dancer is performing.
✅ Correct: The
singer and the dancer are performing.
❌ Incorrect: The
boy and the girl is playing.
✅ Correct: The
boy and the girl are playing.
Rule: 5
If any homonymous noun
is joined by “and” or expresses only one expression, the verb of that Sentence
will be singular.
For example:
❌ Incorrect: Bread and
butter are my breakfast.
✅ Correct: Bread and
butter is my breakfast.
❌ Incorrect: Slow and
steady win the race.
✅ Correct: Slow and
steady wins the race..
